May 19th: Kyoto Presentation Day

Around 9 a.m. my ERAU buddies and I met up with our OMU buddies at the I-Site building, which wasn’t too far from our hotel. Once we got there, we had a short lecture from Dr. Hirose and got to work on our presentations. The presentation had to include each group’s theme, what we had learned, and our impressions of the Kyoto field trip. My group’s theme was Nature focused as we went to shrines, and temples to embrace the beauty that surrounded those places. Joseph, Dante, and I learned so much while in the Kyoto prefecture. Since we had gone to the Kanji Museum, we found out that there are over 50,000 Kanji and that 2024’s Kanji means “tax.” While walking around we wore Yukata’s and our OMU buddies Kyoka and Nene told us that there are 3 types of kimonos and the Yukata is a thinner material used for hotter days. Our impressions were a little scattered but the main one is that many other foreigners were also wearing Yukata’s. After all the presentations were done, my roommate Victoria, Kyoka, and I went to an arcade, which Kyoka said was a popular place to go to after school. We went into a photobooth; however, it wasn’t like any other photobooth, it added a very striking filter. You were able to edit the photos to your liking, but we were timed and since Victoria and I couldn’t understand what the machine was saying, we felt rushed. Kyoka ending up helping us out big time, but in the end we got really cute and funny photos. We then began to play some games and Kyoka explained them to us as Victoria and I didn’t understand what was happening, but once we did, we were all having a great time. After exhausting ourselves with upbeat activities, we all decided to get food and Kyoka brought us to an Izakaya, which is another place college kids go to after school to hang out with friends and have a good time. While we were there Kyoka said she had never spoke in English in an Izakaya before, and I thought that was interesting. Once we had finished our snacks, we stopped by the convenience store to get desserts and then we split ways. It was more of a laxed day as there wasn’t too much running around, but still fun getting to try new things.

June 2nd: The Fourth Floor Doctor

It was a cool Sunday night in summer. Rain was gently sprinkling on my hotel window while I lay in bed, stricken with illness. It was quarter past seven when I heard a knock at my door. Nicholas, my roommate, leaped up and answered immediately. It was Dr. T, the head professor for our study abroad in Japan program. He had come to take me to the doctor.  I had felt quite ill in the days leading up to this point. I was sneezing left and right, and my throat was drier than a desert. However, my symptoms were initially relatively tame, so I attributed them to allergies. Sunday was different, though. I had a fever, I couldn't stop coughing, and I felt extremely weak. I was getting worse, and I had to do something. "The last check-in is at 7:30," Dr. T told Nicholas. I was running out of time. I had to hurry. I jumped out of bed, threw some baggy clothes on, tossed my passport, wallet, and pocket wifi into a backpack, and dashed out the door. I met Dr. T in the elevator, and we...

May 25: Festival and Karaoke

May 25th was the day of the Yukosai Festival at OMU Nakamozu. A lot of us met up at the main gate with a few of the OMU Buddies, and then split up into smaller groups and began to walk around. It was very interesting to see how much was going on at the festival. Right past the entrance was a little flea market where many of the local residents had set up tents selling their old clothes and other belongings. Past that area was a lot of student run activities and stalls. The first thing past the flea market was a stage where many performances were held at. One of which was a koto performance by the Japanese Music Club that we got to meet previously on May 16th. A lot of us watched that performance and it was very good. The main walkway had many student run food stalls. There was a wide selection of food including many things like shaved ice, karaage, takoyaki, and many other options. There were many other activities and performances you could find around. Inside one of the buildings...
